Facebook Video has become a pretty big deal. The summer of 2014 saw one of the biggest shifts in Facebook’s history. The Ice Bucket Challenge was grabbing a lot of attention on the social network. The challenge was a pay it forward type of campaign that involved pouring ice over your head on video or donating a sum of money to a particular cause. I remember it being in August because it had started trending while I was off the grid and on a missions trips in Uganda. When I returned to the U.S. to discover what had happened while I was away, I was dumfounded by this overwhelming enthusiasm for such a simple yet purposeful trend.

Everyone remembers the Ice Bucket Challenge, not necessarily because you did it, but because at least someone you know had done it and you saw the video. Thanks to this charitable trend, tens of thousands of people were posting videos to Facebook (and maybe even the internet) for the first time. The trend that got people pouring ice cubes on their heads was also getting people to upload Facebook videos. And ever since that summer, video on Facebook has grown more & more relevant, and more & more invasive in your online experience.
